OVERLAND PARK, KAN. – A brazen daylight robbery at the Stanley Bank, 7835 W. 151st Street, landed 29-year-old Paul A. Sundquist, of Louisburg, Kansas, in federal court Monday, where he admitted to the crime. Sundquist pleaded guilty to one count of bank robbery, bringing him one step closer to facing serious time for the September 19, 2016, heist.
According to court documents, Sundquist walked into the Stanley Bank and presented a clerk with a demand note. The note, details of which haven’t been released, successfully compelled the clerk to hand over an undisclosed amount of cash. Sundquist then made a hasty exit, fleeing the scene in his pickup truck. It wasn’t a clean getaway, however.
A quick-thinking bystander managed to snag a partial license plate number on Sundquist’s vehicle, immediately alerting law enforcement. What Sundquist didn’t count on was his own technological undoing. Sources confirm he was actively monitoring police radio traffic on his cell phone. When he overheard authorities broadcasting his partial plate number, a wave of panic seemingly overtook him.
Instead of continuing his flight, Sundquist took the unusual step of dialing 911 and surrendering to authorities. This bizarre turn of events effectively ended the manhunt before it could fully escalate. U.S. Attorney Tom Beall’s office confirmed the guilty plea, signaling a swift resolution to the case.
Sundquist now awaits sentencing, which will be scheduled at a later date. He is looking at a potential sentence of up to 20 years behind bars, along with a hefty fine reaching up to $250,000. The feds aren’t messing around with bank robberies, and Sundquist’s attempt at a quick score could cost him dearly.
Beall’s office extended commendations to the FBI, the Overland Park Police Department, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Terra Morehead for their diligent work in bringing Sundquist to justice. This case serves as a reminder that even in the age of technology, old-fashioned police work – and a little bit of luck – can still crack a case.
