OKLAHOMA CITY – In a landmark ruling for domestic violence prevention, the Supreme Court upheld the constitutionality of the federal statute that bans individuals under domestic violence restraining orders from owning firearms or ammunition. This decision comes as a major victory for Operation 922, Oklahoma’s determined initiative to combat gun violence in domestic settings.
In 2018, following the blueprint of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a Department of Justice program aimed at reducing violent crime, the Western District of Oklahoma launched Operation 922. The strategy is simple yet impactful: targeting gun possession among domestic abusers to protect lives and communities.
‘The Supreme Court’s decision today reinforces our office’s unwavering commitment to tackle domestic violence by enforcing federal firearms laws,’ said U.S. Attorney Robert J. Troester. ‘Safety at home precedes safety in the neighborhood, and we are protecting women, children, and law enforcement officers with this measure.’
Domestic abuse does not discriminate; it affects every demographic. When firearms enter the equation, the risk of physical harm escalates for all involved. Operation 922 zeroes in on repeat offenders and violent domestic criminals who flout federal gun laws, uniting law enforcement, prosecutors, and non-profit organizations under a shared mission: to safeguard victims and bring justice.
Since its inception, Operation 922 has charged 338 individuals with federal offenses stemming from domestic violence. Three hundred and twenty-one have been found guilty through trial or plea deals, with 291 sentenced to an average of over 74 months in federal prison. The initiative spans 26 counties across the Western District of Oklahoma.
