Boston – The grimy realities of the federal drug trade hit close to home as Caitlin Marcey, a 27-year-old Norwood resident, was hauled into federal court in Worcester this morning for allegedly distributing synthetic marijuana into state correctional facilities.
Marcey, charged by criminal complaint with distribution of a controlled substance, faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted. Her alleged scheme involved mailing papers soaked in the illegal substance, K2, to jails across the state. This crafty method exploits legal mail privileges that often bypass rigorous screening.
Investigators at the Souza Baranowski Correctional Center (SBCC) in Lancaster, Mass., caught Marcey red-handed in November 2018, arranging the delivery of synthetic marijuana during recorded jail calls. Mailings posing as attorney correspondence were intercepted, revealing K2-laden documents.
In December 2018, U.S. Post Office security footage caught Marcey mailing another package disguised as legal mail to an inmate at the Worcester County House of Corrections. Tests confirmed the presence of synthetic marijuana within the package.
The charges against Marcey carry a sentence of no more than 20 years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a fine up to $1 million. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Greg A. Friedholm and John T. Mulcahy are prosecuting the case, with support from federal and local law enforcement agencies.
According to the DOJ, Marcey is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. The grim details of her alleged crimes underscore the ongoing battle against synthetic drug trafficking within our correctional facilities.
