MUSKOGEE, OKLAHOMA – In a shocking turn of events, Misty Dawn Burton, a 23-year-old woman from Tahlequah, Oklahoma, has been sentenced to 60 months imprisonment for possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking offense.
According to court documents, Burton was found guilty of violating Title 18, United States Code, Section 924(c)(1)(A) and 2, a charge that stems from an investigation by the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco Firearms and Explosives.
The investigation, which began in 2013, led to Burton’s indictment in September 2014. She subsequently pleaded guilty in November of the same year.
The indictment alleged that Burton knowingly possessed a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime on or about March 19, 2013. The crime in question was the distribution of oxycodone.
U.S. District Judge Ronald A. White presided over the hearing, during which Burton was sentenced to 60 months imprisonment, followed by three years of supervised release. She will remain in the custody of the U.S. Marshal Service pending transportation to her designated facility.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Dean Burris represented the government in the case.
Burton’s sentence marks a significant blow to those involved in drug trafficking and firearm-related crimes in the Eastern District of Oklahoma. As the investigation and subsequent prosecution demonstrate, law enforcement agencies will continue to work tirelessly to bring perpetrators to justice.
