Taimur Khan Pleads Guilty to Importing Prescription Drugs
A Canadian national, Taimur Khan, 32, has pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit crimes against the United States, money laundering, and wire and mail fraud in federal court.
Khan was arrested on July 15, 2014, at Los Angeles International Airport upon his attempted entry into the United States.
The court was advised that Khan conspired with Javed Sunesra, Zuned Sunesra, and Bismilla Sunesra to import prescription drugs into the United States from India between 2004 and August 2014.
The Sunesras’ illegal enterprise netted millions of dollars over the years, selling non-FDA approved, non-approved drugs that did not require prescriptions.
Khan joined the conspiracy in early 2012 and continued to work with the Sunesras until late 2013. He set up a fake website called ‘mygiftcard.biz’ to facilitate payment processing for the illegal business.
Prosecutors allege that Khan’s scheme allowed consumers to use credit cards to purchase illegal medications, and he was paid a ‘commission’ before wiring the remaining proceeds to the Sunesras’ bank accounts.
U.S. Attorney David J. Hickton announced the guilty plea, and Judge Cathy Bissoon scheduled sentencing for January 7, 2015. The law provides for a total sentence of 20 years in prison, a fine of $250,000, or both.
The FDA and IRS conducted the investigation that led to Khan’s prosecution, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Eric S. Rosen is prosecuting the case.
Taimur Khan is currently being detained pending sentencing.
