In a grim victory for justice, Jelani Amari Petersen, 28, from Tallahassee, Florida, was found guilty yesterday by a federal jury of attempting to entice a minor to engage in unlawful sexual activity. The United States Attorney for the Northern District of Florida, John P. Heekin, announced the verdict.

Heekin praised the efforts of his office and law enforcement partners, stating, ‘This case exemplifies our commitment to protect America’s children from predators.’ Petersen is now facing a minimum mandatory sentence of 10 years in federal prison, followed by life imprisonment and supervised release.

Operation Lifeguard, an undercover operation aimed at apprehending online child exploiters, led to Petersen’s arrest. He communicated with an undercover officer posing as a minor female, offering money for sexual encounters. His arrest was the result of a joint investigation by local and federal agencies.

The sentencing is scheduled for October 3, 2025, before Chief United States District Judge Allen C. Winsor. The case underscores the ongoing efforts of Project Safe Childhood to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse online.
