Tampa Rap Artist Sentenced to 3 Years for Tax Fraud
Torry Williams, 24, a Tampa-based rap artist who performs under the name ‘Toon Trill,’ has been sentenced to 36 months in federal prison for his role in a tax fraud scheme. Williams’ sentence was handed down after he pleaded guilty to theft of government money and aggravated identity theft on March 30, 2018.
According to officials, Williams was involved in a scheme to file fraudulent tax returns in the names of others between November 2012 and June 2013. During this time, the IRS issued approximately $149,847 in refunds based on these fake returns.
As part of the scheme, Williams used the personal information of over 14 different individuals, including their dates of birth, names, and social security numbers. This brazen attempt at defrauding the government resulted in significant financial losses for taxpayers.
As part of his sentence, Williams has been ordered to pay $149,847 in restitution to the government. This amount reflects the full extent of the financial damage caused by Williams’ actions.
The investigation into Williams’ tax fraud scheme was led by the Internal Revenue Service-Criminal Investigation. Assistant United States Attorney Michael J. Harwin prosecuted the case, bringing Williams to justice for his crimes.
U.S. Attorney Christopher P. Canova praised the efforts of law enforcement and prosecutors in securing a conviction and sentence for Williams. ‘Taxpayers trust the government to collect and distribute their hard-earned dollars fairly and honestly,’ Canova said. ‘Williams’ actions undermined that trust, and today’s sentence reflects the gravity of his crimes.’
The United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Florida is committed to holding individuals accountable for their crimes, particularly those that target vulnerable members of our society.
