Idaho Woman Sentenced for Assault with a Dangerous Weapon

Tanisha Phelps, a 20-year-old woman from Fort Hall, Idaho, has been sentenced for her role in a violent assault on a 72-year-old victim in a wheelchair.

According to court documents, the assault took place on December 14, 2014, at a residence on the Fort Hall Indian Reservation. Phelps became angry after the victim turned off her music, and she punched the victim in the forehead with her fist.

Phelps then grabbed two kitchen knives and cut the victim’s forearm, causing her to bleed. The victim told police that Phelps was ‘mad’ after her music was turned off.

Phelps was interviewed by police and confessed to cutting the victim with the knife. The case was investigated by the Fort Hall Police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

On April 11, 2016, Phelps pleaded guilty to the charge of assault with a dangerous weapon. She was sentenced yesterday to time served, 11 months, which includes six months in the Shoshone-Bannock Tribal jail and five months in federal custody.

Chief United States District Judge B. Lynn Winmill also ordered Phelps to serve an additional six months in a halfway house, followed by three years of supervised release.

The harsh sentence handed down to Phelps serves as a warning to those who commit violent crimes. Residents of Fort Hall and the surrounding areas can rest a little easier knowing that justice has been served.
