CAMDEN, N.J. – Taurean Gordon, 40, of Irvington, New Jersey, is facing a substantial prison sentence after admitting to a double-barreled crime: peddling fentanyl, heroin, and cocaine while illegally packing a loaded firearm. Gordon pleaded guilty today in federal court before U.S. Circuit Judge Stephanos Bibas, confessing to offenses that could lock him up for decades.
The feds say Gordon was caught on February 11, 2021, with narcotics clearly packaged for street-level distribution. A search revealed he wasn’t just moving weight; he was also carrying a North American Arms Inc. revolver loaded with five rounds of ammunition. Gordon’s prior felony conviction already stripped him of the right to own a gun, and investigators believe he possessed the weapon specifically to protect his illicit drug operation.
According to court documents, Gordon admitted to possessing heroin, fentanyl, and cocaine with the intent to distribute. This isn’t a case of simple possession; prosecutors are building a case for a large-scale trafficking operation. The charges against Gordon include one count of being a previously convicted felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition, one count of possession with intent to distribute controlled substances, and one count of possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime.
The potential penalties are severe. The narcotics charge carries a maximum of 20 years behind bars and a $1 million fine. The gun charge brings another 10 years. But the kicker? The firearm-related charge tied to drug trafficking carries a mandatory minimum of five years – to be served consecutively to any other sentence. That could add up to a life sentence, plus a potential $250,000 fine for each firearm count.
The bust was a joint operation between the Newark Police Division, led by Director Fritz Fragé, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), under the direction of Special Agent in Charge Bryan Miller. Assistant U.S. Attorneys DeNae Thomas of the Health Care Fraud Unit and George Barchini of the Narcotics/Organized Crime and Drug Enforcement Task Force Unit are prosecuting the case, determined to send a message about the consequences of combining drug trafficking with illegal firearms.
Gordon’s sentencing is currently scheduled for May 8th. Grimy Times will be in the courtroom to report on the outcome.
