Lynchburg Tax Preparer Sentenced for Conspiracy to Commit False Claims
Lynchburg, VIRGINIA – Jackie G. Woodson Jr., a Lynchburg-based tax preparer, was sentenced to 18 months in federal prison for his role in a tax scheme that included filing false tax returns to claim fictitious Earned Income Tax Credits.
Woodson, who owned a Colbert/Ball Tax Service franchise in Lynchburg, Va., was found to have conspired with two of his employees, Terry R. Rose and Stella Hester-Jenkins, to prepare and file tax returns that reported fictitious Schedule C income. This resulted in increased Earned Income Tax Credits and refunds.
The Internal Revenue Service conducted the investigation, which revealed that the conspirators often claimed Schedule C income through babysitting or childcare income where none actually existed or by greatly exaggerating the amount of income being earned through these activities.
Woodson previously pled guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit false claims. His co-conspirators, Rose and Hester-Jenkins, were previously sentenced to 18 months in federal prison and 3 years’ probation, respectively.
Assistant United States Attorneys C. Patrick Hogeboom III and Charlene R. Day prosecuted the case for the United States.
The case serves as a reminder of the importance of honest and accurate tax filing.
The investigation was led by the Internal Revenue Service.
