Haymarket Resident Faces Prison Time for Tax Evasion and Identity Theft

A Haymarket, Virginia woman, Karen Holtz, pleaded guilty today in U.S. District Court in the Eastern District of Virginia to filing a false income tax return and aggravated identity theft, announced Acting Deputy Assistant Attorney General Stuart M. Goldberg and U.S. Attorney Dana J. Boente.

Between 2008 and April 2013, Holtz, who worked for JMS Ventures Inc., charged her company’s customers’ credit cards without authorization and transferred customer payments made through PayPal directly to her personal bank account. She also used the customers’ personal identification information to make fraudulent charges to their credit cards.

Holtz intentionally did not enter the unauthorized checks and transfers in the company’s accounting software, QuickBooks, underreporting her income on tax returns for the years 2008 through 2013. The false returns failed to report more than $305,000 in income, making her guilty of tax evasion.

Holtz faces a statutory maximum sentence of three years in prison for filing a false return and a mandatory minimum sentence of two years in prison for aggravated identity theft. She also faces a period of supervised release, restitution, and monetary penalties.

The case was investigated by the U.S. Secret Service, IRS-Criminal Investigation, and the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office. Assistant U.S. Attorney Katherine L. Wong and Trial Attorney Kimberly G. Ang of the Tax Division prosecuted the case.

Sentencing is scheduled for June 23. The Tax Division’s enforcement efforts may be found on their website.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia thanks the special agents for their dedication to bringing Holtz to justice for her crimes.
