Utah Man Sentenced for Filing False Tax Refunds
A Spanish Fork, Utah, man has been brought to justice for engaging in a brazen tax refund scam, as he was sentenced to 33 months in prison for filing false claims for income tax refunds.
U.S. District Judge Dee Benson handed down the sentence, which also includes three years of supervised release upon Wardle’s release from prison. Wardle was ordered to pay $29,527 in restitution to the IRS, a paltry sum compared to the more than $600,000 in refunds he sought through his deceitful means.
The 33-month prison sentence is a stern reminder that tax refund scams will not be tolerated. Wardle’s crimes were not limited to his own tax return, as he prepared eight false tax returns on behalf of others, further exacerbating the damage caused by his actions.
Wardle’s guilty plea came on December 9, 2013, just before his trial was set to begin. The indictment revealed that in January 2009, Wardle filed a false individual income tax return seeking a refund of $32,115.
The case was a collaborative effort between the IRS-Criminal Investigation and the Tax Division, with Trial Attorneys Michael Romano and Stuart Wexler leading the prosecution. The successful outcome of this case serves as a testament to the tireless efforts of law enforcement agencies in protecting the integrity of our tax system.
As the investigation revealed, Wardle’s scheme was not an isolated incident, but rather a calculated attempt to deceive the system. His actions had far-reaching consequences, not only for the individuals he targeted but also for the broader community that relies on a fair and honest tax system.
