Utah Federal Judge Hands Down Decades-Long Sentence for Major Drug Smuggling Operation
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – In a relentless strike against drug trafficking networks, Cruz Javier Garcia, 39, from Bland, Virginia, was today sentenced to 246 months’ imprisonment and a five-year term of supervised release after being caught with 40 pounds of methamphetamine and cocaine while navigating the District of Utah.
The sentence follows Garcia’s guilty plea on May 8, 2025, for possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute and possession of cocaine with intent to distribute. His fall from grace began when he was pulled over for speeding on September 22, 2023. What police found during the stop would shock even the most seasoned law enforcement professionals.
Inside a suitcase in Garcia’s vehicle, troopers discovered a black garbage bag stuffed with approximately 40 bags of methamphetamine, each weighing one pound. Tucked away in a backpack, they also found 3.5 pounds of cocaine. The sheer volume of drugs seized underscores the scope of Garcia’s operation.
“Drug trafficking is a scourge on communities, and those who seek to profit from it while our communities are left to bear the cost of addiction, violence, and death, is unacceptable,” said Acting U.S. Attorney Felice John Viti of the District of Utah. “Garcia’s sentence sends a clear message to anyone involved in trafficking drugs in the District of Utah: you will be caught, prosecuted, and held accountable.”
Commissioner Beau Mason of the Utah Department of Public Safety echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the department’s commitment to interdicting contraband on state highways and providing professional investigations that lead to successful prosecutions. The partnership between the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Utah and the Utah Department of Public Safety was pivotal in Garcia’s conviction.
This case is part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative that mobilizes the full resources of the Department of Justice to combat illegal immigration, dismantle cartels and transnational criminal organizations, and protect communities from violent crime. Assistant United States Attorney Christopher Burton prosecuted the case.
