Robbie Hunt, Crop Insurance Fraud, Texas 2023

Bowling Green, KY – In a stunning reversal of fortune, Taylor County farmer Robert ‘Robbie’ Thomas Hunt has been sentenced to federal prison for an elaborate crop insurance fraud scheme that spanned seven years. The 61-year-old from Campbellsville was handed a 12-month and one-day sentence, followed by two years of supervised release, according to officials.

U.S. Attorney Kyle G. Bumgarner and Special Agent in Charge Miles Davis of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Office of Inspector General confirmed Hunt’s fate on August 26, 2025. The sentence came after Hunt pleaded guilty to charges related to crop insurance fraud on March 27, 2025.

According to court documents, Hunt sold crops under aliases and drastically underreported production figures on his crop insurance claim forms from 2014 through 2021. This deceitful practice resulted in over $1.6 million in fraudulent insurance payouts. Hunt was also ordered to pay restitution of $1,686,002 and was hit with a fine of $250,000.

Hunt’s scheme came crashing down when the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Office of Inspector General, and Risk Management Agency, Special Investigations Staff, launched an investigation that eventually led to his downfall. Assistant U.S. Attorney David Weiser prosecuted the case with vigor.

There is no parole in the federal system, leaving Hunt to serve out his sentence behind bars. The community of Campbellsville now grapples with the repercussions of one man’s fraudulent actions, a stark reminder of the consequences when greed clouds judgment.

This case serves as a cautionary tale for those who might consider similar schemes. For Robbie Thomas Hunt, it marks the end of an era and the beginning of a new chapter—one behind bars.
