Nickolas Sharp, Data Theft and Extortion, New York

NICKOLAS SHARP, a former senior developer at New York-based technology company Company-1, has pleaded guilty in Manhattan federal court for his role in a sophisticated data theft and extortion scheme. United States Attorney Damian Williams revealed that Sharp extorted the company for nearly $2 million to return stolen files and reveal a supposed vulnerability.

According to the Indictment, Sharp, who was employed by Company-1 from August 2018 until April 2021, misused his administrative access to steal gigabytes of confidential data. He concealed his actions using a VPN service, Surfshark, and altered log retention policies to cover his tracks.

Sharp’s scheme escalated when he sent a ransom note demanding 50 Bitcoin, worth approximately $1.9 million at the time, from Company-1. When the company refused, Sharp retaliated by publishing stolen files online, resulting in the loss of over $4 billion in market capitalization for Company-1.

After being confronted with evidence, Sharp made numerous false statements to FBI agents during a search warrant executed at his Oregon residence. Today’s guilty plea covers charges of intentionally damaging a protected computer, wire fraud, and making false statements to the FBI.

“Nickolas Sharp’s company entrusted him with confidential information that he exploited and held for ransom,” said U.S. Attorney Damian Williams. “Adding insult to injury, when Sharp wasn’t given his ransom demands, he retaliated by causing false news stories to be published about the company, which resulted in his company’s market capitalization plummeting by over $4 billion.”

Sharp faces significant penalties for his actions, ensuring that justice is served for his destructive and unethical behavior.
