Guilty Plea in Firearm Possession Case

A New Haven man has pleaded guilty to illegally possessing a firearm and ammunition, despite having a lengthy history of felony convictions.

Terence Garrett, 46, pleaded guilty to one count of possession of a firearm and ammunition by a previously convicted felon.

According to court documents, law enforcement received information that Garrett was selling heroin out of a Shelton Avenue apartment and that he was in possession of a firearm. Investigators conducted a court-authorized search of the apartment on October 13, 2016, and seized a .25 caliber pistol loaded with five rounds of ammunition.

Additionally, investigators seized 12 bags of heroin and a digital scale. Garrett was arrested at that time, and his arrest marked the culmination of a lengthy investigation into his activities.

Garrett’s criminal history includes 11 felony convictions, including two convictions for possessing a firearm without a permit and two convictions for carrying a dangerous weapon.

Garrett is scheduled to be sentenced by U.S. District Judge Vanessa L. Bryant on July 19, 2017, at which time he faces a maximum term of imprisonment of 10 years. He has been detained since his arrest.

The matter has been investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and New Haven Police Department. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Anthony Kaplan and Jennifer Laraia.

Garrett’s guilty plea marks a significant development in the ongoing effort to combat gun violence and heroin trafficking in the region.
