MISSOULA, MT — A stunning case of corporate espionage has emerged in the heart of Big Sky Country. Columbia Falls resident Teri Anne Bell, 58, pleaded guilty to wire fraud after being caught in a sordid scheme that saw her pilfer approximately $159,000 from Falkor SID Inc., a firearm manufacturing and distribution firm in Kalispell.
According to U.S. Attorney Jesse Laslovich, Bell admitted to using pre-signed checks and manipulating the company’s accounting software to funnel funds into her personal accounts. The theft spanned nearly four years, from May 2018 until December 2021, with Bell reportedly completing 45 unauthorized transactions.
Bell faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison, a $250,000 fine, and three years of supervised release, as Judge Donald W. Molloy prepares to mete out justice on October 8th. For now, Bell remains free pending further proceedings.
Documents filed by the government reveal that Bell, while serving as finance manager for Falkor SID Inc., had access to both the company’s bank account and its accounting software. She used this access to write checks from Falkor to herself and her creditors, then altered the records to mask the transactions as legitimate business expenses.
It wasn’t until fall 2021 that the unsuspecting owners of Falkor SID Inc. grew suspicious and initiated a financial audit, which exposed Bell’s misdeeds. The stolen funds were reportedly used for personal indulgences, including high-end hotels in Las Vegas and Quinn’s Hot Springs, as well as payments to retail outlets, liquor stores, collection agencies, and streaming services.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Karla E. Painter is handling the prosecution of Bell’s case, with the FBI and Flathead County Sheriff’s Office leading the investigation. As the grimy details of this white-collar crime continue to unfold, it serves as a stark reminder that even in seemingly wholesome industries, corruption can hide in plain sight.
