JACKSONVILLE, FL – Sedrick Williams, Jr. (24, Jacksonville) won’t be hitting the streets anytime soon. The Jacksonville resident pleaded guilty today to possession with the intent to distribute 5 grams or more of actual methamphetamine, a charge that carries a hefty penalty. Williams is looking at a minimum mandatory sentence of 5 years in federal prison, with a potential maximum of 40 years. A sentencing date has yet to be scheduled, but one thing’s for sure: his days of dealing are over.
The bust unfolded December 6, 2023, when Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO) detectives were already surveilling a location on Broadway and Garfield Streets as part of an unrelated investigation. They watched as Williams and another individual exited a residence, each getting into separate vehicles. Detectives didn’t recognize Williams but suspected the other man was a person of interest in the ongoing case. Both vehicles sped off, and that’s when things escalated quickly.
What started as observation quickly turned into a full-blown pursuit. While detectives lost track of the other vehicle, they kept Williams’ gray sedan in sight as he roared down Broadway Avenue. It wasn’t long before Williams began displaying reckless driving behavior – speeding, weaving through traffic, and generally acting like he had no regard for other drivers or pedestrians. When detectives attempted a traffic stop after he blew through a red light, Williams simply floored it, initiating a high-speed chase that snaked through multiple Jacksonville streets.
The chase was a disaster waiting to happen. Williams didn’t just run from the police; he actively endangered the public, driving into oncoming traffic and forcing other vehicles and pedestrians to swerve to avoid a collision. It ended with a crash, Williams’ car landing in a ditch. But even then, he wasn’t done. He bailed from the vehicle and tried to flee on foot before a JSO officer tackled him and took him into custody. The scene was a mess, and the contents of the car were even worse.
A search of the wrecked vehicle revealed a loaded Smith & Wesson M&P 9 Shield Plus handgun – reported stolen in Jacksonville back in 2022 – and a black latex glove stuffed with 9mm rounds. Inside the center console, detectives found a cocktail of narcotics, neatly packaged in separate bags. That included 4.3 grams of fentanyl, 2.1 grams of cocaine base, and a significant 10.5 grams of 98% pure methamphetamine. It was a one-stop shop for illegal substances, all thanks to Williams’ reckless behavior.
The investigation was a joint effort between the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, with Assistant United States Attorney Aakash Singh leading the prosecution. This case is also part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a federal program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence by fostering trust with communities and focusing on strategic enforcement. In the end, Williams’ attempt to outrun the law only landed him closer to a lengthy prison sentence, and a safer Jacksonville for everyone else.
