BOSTON, MA – Tevin Abercrombie, 29, of Boston, is headed back to federal prison after a jury found him guilty of illegally possessing a firearm and ammunition, a crime committed while already under court supervision. Abercrombie was sentenced today to 78 months – six and a half years – followed by three years of supervised release.
The case centers around an April 2020 traffic stop. Boston Police officers, responding to reports of shots fired, pulled over a vehicle of interest. Inside, they found Abercrombie in possession of a loaded Taurus 9mm pistol. Crucially, the serial number on the weapon had been deliberately obliterated, making it untraceable.
This wasn’t Abercrombie’s first run-in with the law, or with federal firearms charges. In 2016, he was convicted in federal court of being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition and conspiracy to distribute crack cocaine, cocaine, and heroin. That conviction earned him a 60-month prison sentence. He was still on supervised release from that sentence when he was caught with the illegal handgun in 2020.
The obliterated serial number adds another layer of seriousness to the offense, suggesting an attempt to conceal the weapon’s origin and potentially its involvement in other crimes. Federal authorities have been increasingly focused on tracing firearms used in violent acts, and altering a serial number directly hinders those efforts.
Acting United States Attorney Joshua S. Levy, alongside James M. Ferguson, Special Agent in Charge of the ATF’s Boston Field Division, and Boston Police Commissioner Michael Cox, announced the sentencing. Assistant U.S. Attorneys John T. Dawley and Fred M. Wyshak, III of the Organized Crime & Gang Unit successfully prosecuted the case, building a solid case against the repeat offender.
This prosecution is part of the Department of Justice’s “Project Safe Neighborhoods” (PSN), a nationwide initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence by fostering collaboration between law enforcement and communities. The program focuses on strategic enforcement and community-based prevention efforts, attempting to address the root causes of violence while holding offenders accountable. Abercrombie’s case serves as a stark reminder that those with prior convictions who illegally possess firearms will face significant consequences.
