Forced Labor and Human Trafficking Ring Uncovered in Texas
A Texas couple has been indicted on federal charges of forcing a minor into 16 years of slavery, a shocking example of human trafficking and exploitation.
Mohamed Toure, 57, and his wife Denise Cros-Toure, 57, of Ft. Worth, Texas, were charged in a five-count indictment with forced labor, alien harboring for financial gain, and conspiracies to commit forced labor and alien harboring. Mohamed Toure was also charged with making false statements to federal agents.
The indictment alleges that the couple brought the victim, a minor child from Guinea, West Africa, to work for them in their home in January 2000. For over 16 years, they allegedly forced her to work long hours, handling childcare, cooking, cleaning, and performing yardwork without pay. Despite being close in age to their five biological children, the couple denied her access to schooling, medical care, and other opportunities afforded to their own children.
According to the indictment, Denise Cros-Toure physically abused the victim on several occasions, slapping or striking her as punishment. The couple isolated her from her family and threatened serious harm if she refused to work. The victim was only able to escape in August 2016, with the help of neighbors.
The indictment also alleges that the couple confiscated the victim’s official documents and caused her to remain unlawfully in the United States after her tourist visa expired in March 2000. They threatened to send her back to Guinea if her work was unsatisfactory.
If convicted, the defendants face severe penalties, including a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison, a $250,000 fine, and mandatory restitution. The case is being investigated by the Department of State, Diplomatic Security Services’ Houston Field Office, and is being prosecuted by the Civil Rights Division’s Criminal Section and Human Trafficking Prosecution Unit, as well as the Northern District of Texas.
