Mark B Reimer, Tax Evasion, Texas 2012

Dr. Mark B. Reimer, 69, of Texas, is headed to federal prison after being sentenced to 24 months for a decade-long scheme to dodge more than $1.2 million in federal income taxes. The physician, who earned over $4.3 million from 2003 to 2012, admitted to willfully evading tax payments while funneling hundreds of thousands in cash to his children and luxury purchases.

Court records show Reimer operated a medical practice in Texas from 2003 to 2007, then worked as a physician for a private employer in Minnesota until 2015. Despite annual earnings exceeding $440,000, Reimer and his wife, Ana C. Reimer, 69, filed joint returns revealing massive unpaid liabilities — including a $20,000 penalty for failing to pay employment taxes tied to his Texas clinic between 2005 and 2007.

Instead of paying what he owed, Reimer pulled more than $337,000 in cash from accounts to shield it from the IRS. Over $353,000 was transferred to their four adult children, while another $251,000 vanished on airline tickets, furniture, and high-end retail. These weren’t desperate moves — they were calculated maneuvers to starve the IRS of assets.

In 2013 and again in 2015, the couple filed for bankruptcy — not out of financial collapse, but as a weapon against the taxman. Under oath, both falsely claimed they hadn’t gifted money to their children, despite documented transfers. The court saw through the lies.

On January 13, 2021, Mark and Ana Reimer each pleaded guilty to one count of tax evasion. Last week, Senior U.S. District Judge Paul A. Magnuson handed down judgment: 24 months behind bars for Mark Reimer, one year of supervised release to follow. Ana Reimer received 24 months of probation. Both were ordered to pay $857,127.24 in restitution — a fraction of what they owe, but a signal the feds are collecting.

Acting U.S. Attorney Charles J. Kovats announced the sentence, crediting the IRS Criminal Investigation Division for peeling back the layers of deception. Assistant U.S. Attorney David J. MacLaughlin prosecuted the case, proving that even doctors with stethoscopes aren’t immune to handcuffs when they rig the system.
