David Hunt, Tax Refund Fraud, Texas 2016

Fort Worth, Texas – In a plot worthy of the silver screen, four members of a Texas family are facing federal charges for what authorities describe as a multimillion-dollar tax refund fraud scheme. The crime ring, which included David Hunt and his twin sons, Brandon and Baylon Hunt, along with Corey Burt, allegedly connived to file false tax returns seeking over $8.5 million in refunds.

Their operation began in 2016 and involved fabricating documents in the names of purported trusts. The family members are accused of submitting falsified financial instruments and altered money orders to the IRS, leading to the issuance of over $1 million in fraudulent refunds. According to the indictment, Brandon Hunt even filed a false return under his own name.

While it’s not clear what luxury goods or cryptocurrency they acquired with their ill-gotten gains, authorities did note that some of the proceeds were used for real estate purchases. The trio also allegedly shared the loot through monetary transfers between themselves.

Each defendant, charged with conspiracy and aiding in the preparation of false tax returns, faces up to five years in prison for the conspiracy charge and three years for each aiding count. Sentencing will be determined by a federal district court judge following consideration of guidelines and other statutory factors.

This announcement comes from Acting Deputy Assistant Attorney General Karen E. Kelly of the Justice Department’s Tax Division and Acting U.S. Attorney Nancy Larson of the Northern District of Texas. The IRS Criminal Investigation unit is handling the case, with Trial Attorneys Melissa Siskind, Daniel Lipkowitz, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Matthew Weybrecht prosecuting.

Remember, an indictment is just an allegation. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
