Jose Rodriguez Jr., CSAM Possession and Smuggling, Texas 2024

HOUSTON, TX – The southern border remains a hotbed of criminal activity, and the Southern District of Texas (SDTX) is responding with a surge of new cases. This week alone, 210 individuals were charged in connection with immigration and border security violations, according to U.S. Attorney Nicholas J. Ganjei, as part of Operation Take Back America. But beyond the numbers, the cases reveal a disturbing undercurrent of depravity and repeat offenses.

The most harrowing case centers around Lyford resident Jose Rodriguez Jr., who received a 240-month federal prison sentence for possessing hundreds of images depicting the sexual abuse of prepubescent children. This wasn’t a standalone offense. Rodriguez was originally arrested in connection with an alien transporting event, during which law enforcement seized his phone, uncovering the sickening trove of child sexual abuse material (CSAM). Court records revealed a prior conviction for aggravated sexual assault of a child, where he tied up and attempted to assault a 9-year-old victim, also restraining an eight-year-old witness. Even after serving 13 years for that horrific crime, Rodriguez continued downloading CSAM just six months after his release, and previously received 16 months for a human smuggling conviction.

“Those who sexually assault children, possess child sexual abuse material, or smuggle human beings like some sort of commodity are all imbued with a common trait: total disdain for the inherent value and dignity of a human being,” Ganjei stated. “The defendant here had a history of doing all three.” Ganjei’s office successfully argued for the maximum possible sentence, ensuring Rodriguez will spend the next two decades behind bars. The jury’s attention to this important case ensured justice was served, though the scars of Rodriguez’s actions will undoubtedly linger.

Beyond the Rodriguez case, the SDTX is aggressively prosecuting illegal reentry. Humberto Alvarez-Chio, Irvin Gonzalez-Silva, and Miguel Angel Reyes-Garcia – all previously removed from the country – were apprehended in the Rio Grande Valley. Alvarez-Chio has a prior illegal reentry conviction, Gonzalez-Silva a history of human smuggling, and Reyes-Garcia a conviction for sexual assault of a child. Juan Cruz-Montiel, removed July 11th after serving time for burglary, was found near Hidalgo just four days later. Each of these men faces up to 20 years in federal prison if convicted. Euclides Vasquez-Hernandez, removed in 2018, was discovered in Robstown in March and now faces the same potential sentence after admitting to crossing a river to re-enter the U.S.

The border isn’t just a conduit for desperate migrants and hardened criminals; it’s also exploited for profit. In Laredo, a jury convicted Sharon Thompkins of South Carolina for transporting four illegal aliens concealed in the sleeper compartment of a tractor-trailer. Despite claims she was merely present, the jury saw through the defense and found her guilty, facing up to five years in prison. Meanwhile, Carlos Alberto Salinas of Sullivan City attempted to… (report incomplete in source material).

The SDTX isn’t just reacting to crime; it’s actively pursuing it. These 210 new cases, including 14 involving human smuggling, 101 illegal entries, and 89 felony reentries – many with prior violent or narcotics convictions – demonstrate a commitment to securing the southern border and holding those who exploit it accountable. While the challenges are immense, the SDTX is sending a clear message: cross the line, and you will face the consequences.”
