Russell Alan Ragsdale, Hallucinogen-Driven Murder, Texas 2022

Seagoville native Russell Alan Ragsdale, 25, is now serving a 66-month federal prison sentence for the tragic murder of his roommate under the influence of hallucinogenic mushrooms. The incident, which unfolded on February 3, 2022, in Seagoville, Texas, led to a guilty plea by Ragsdale, who claimed self-defense but was later found lacking evidence to support that claim.

Ragsdale has been in federal custody since his arrest on November 22, 2024. His journey through the criminal justice system began when he shot his roommate multiple times during an altercation, resulting in the victim’s death. Ragsdale claimed his roommate attacked him first, but investigators found three firearms, including a Glock and an AR-15 rifle, alongside nearly two grams of mushrooms at the scene.

Further investigation revealed Ragsdale’s phone contained a history of drug use dating back to November 2021, with evidence indicating he purchased and consumed hallucinogenic mushrooms just days before the shooting. His admission during his guilty plea confirmed that he was under the influence of mushrooms when he possessed the Glock.

Judge Barbara M. G. Lynn sentenced Ragsdale following a hearing where she dismissed his self-defense claim and held him responsible for the victim’s death. The sentence includes 66 months in federal prison followed by three years of supervised release.

The investigation was conducted by the FBI’s Dallas Field Office, the Dallas Police Department, the ATF’s Dallas Field Division, the Seagoville Police Department, and the Texas Department of Public Safety. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jongwoo Chung prosecuted the case, ensuring Ragsdale faces justice for his actions.

Russell Alan Ragsdale now awaits transfer to the Bureau of Prisons to begin serving his sentence, a stark reminder of the consequences that come with drug intoxication and the misuse of firearms.
