Rodriguez Gets Life for Child Abuse, Smuggling
McALLEN, TX – Jose Rodriguez Jr., a resident of Lyford, Texas, will spend the next 20 years in federal prison after being sentenced for possessing hundreds of images depicting the sexual abuse of prepubescent children. The sentence, handed down this week by a federal court in McAllen, adds to Rodriguez’s already extensive criminal history, which includes a prior conviction for aggravated sexual assault of a child and a 16-month sentence for human smuggling.
The case initially unfolded during an investigation into an alien transporting event. Law enforcement seized Rodriguez’s phone, uncovering over 250 images and videos of child sexual abuse material (CSAM). Court testimony revealed the horrific details of his prior crime: tying up a 9-year-old victim before attempting sexual assault, and similarly restraining an eight-year-old witness. The court noted Rodriguez downloaded CSAM files on 20 separate occasions, starting just six months after his release from a 13-year sentence for the aggravated sexual assault conviction.
“Those who sexually assault children, possess child sexual abuse material, or smuggle human beings like some sort of commodity are all imbued with a common trait: total disdain for the inherent value and dignity of a human being,” stated U.S. Attorney Nicholas J. Ganjei. “The defendant here had a history of doing all three. Fortunately, SDTX prosecutors were successful in advocating for the maximum possible sentence in this case, that of 20 years, so Mr. Rodriguez will now have two decades to reflect on his conduct. I thank the jury for their time and attention in this important case.”
Beyond the Rodriguez case, the Southern District of Texas (SDTX) announced 210 new cases filed between July 11-17 as part of “Operation Take Back America.” These cases encompass a range of border security and immigration-related crimes, including 14 instances of human smuggling. A total of 101 individuals are charged with illegal entry into the United States, while 89 face felony reentry charges after prior removal. Many of those charged have prior felony convictions involving narcotics, violent crime, and sexual assault.
In Corpus Christi, Euclides Vasquez-Hernandez admitted to illegally reentering the U.S. after being removed in 2018, facing up to 20 years in prison. Humberto Alvarez-Chio, Irvin Gonzalez-Silva and Miguel Angel Reyes-Garcia were charged with prior convictions for illegal reentry, human smuggling, and sexual assault of a child, respectively, each potentially facing 20 years. Juan Cruz-Montiel was found near Hidalgo just four days after his removal, also facing up to 20 years. A Laredo jury convicted Sharon Thompkins of transporting illegal aliens, finding her guilty of concealing four individuals in a tractor-trailer sleeper compartment; she faces up to five years. And Sullivan City resident Carlos Alberto Salinas attempted to pick… [article truncated – remainder of Salinas case not provided in source].
The SDTX continues to aggressively pursue these cases, signaling a sustained commitment to securing the southern border and prosecuting those who exploit vulnerable individuals or engage in criminal activity. The ongoing operation highlights the complex challenges faced by law enforcement in the region and the severe consequences awaiting those who break the law.
