Texas Man Admits Role in Sinaloa Cartel Cocaine Ring

TAMPA, FL – Ron Ramirez, Jr. (24, Texas) admitted today to being a key cog in a multi-state cocaine distribution network with ties to the notorious Los Chapitos faction of the Sinaloa Cartel. Ramirez pleaded guilty to conspiracy, distribution of 500 grams or more of cocaine, and use of a communication facility in the commission of drug trafficking crimes, a United States Attorney Gregory W. Kehoe announced.

The feds say Ramirez wasn’t slinging dope himself, but was the man behind the curtain, handling the logistics and communications for the operation. Court documents detail how Ramirez, acting on behalf of co-defendant Esequiel Maldonado, recruited and paid Schuyler Jordan Thompson to act as a courier. Thompson was allegedly flown into Polk County, Florida, to pick up a substantial quantity of cocaine directly supplied by Los Chapitos.

The operation wasn’t a one-way street. Thompson’s mission: deliver the cocaine to Martin DeJesus Maldonado, Jr. in Lee County. Maldonado, Jr. then allegedly took over the distribution within the Middle District of Florida, and funneled the drug proceeds back up the chain to Esequiel Maldonado. It’s a classic pipeline – and Ramirez was the one keeping the flow moving.

Ramirez now faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 5 years in federal prison, but the potential maximum is a staggering 84 years. The investigation, led by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office, pulled in assistance from the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, and the Virginia State Police. Assistant United States Attorney Christopher F. Murray is prosecuting the case.

This bust isn’t an isolated incident. It’s part of “Operation Take Back America,” a nationwide initiative spearheaded by the Department of Justice. The operation aims to dismantle cartels and transnational criminal organizations, and “protect our communities from the perpetrators of violent crime.” It’s a broad-stroke attempt to stem the tide of illegal drugs and associated violence – and Ramirez is just the latest domino to fall.

Meanwhile, the cases against Martin DeJesus Maldonado, Jr. and Esequiel Maldonado remain pending. Expect more indictments and potentially more guilty pleas as the feds continue to unravel this network. The Sinaloa Cartel’s reach extends far beyond the border, and this case proves they’re still moving weight within the United States. Grimy Times will continue to follow this developing story.
