Failure to Pay Child Support Lands Houston Man in Hot Water
A Houston, Texas man is facing serious consequences after being indicted for failure to pay over $13,734 in child support. Jeremy M. Willms, 32, was charged by a federal grand jury in South Dakota for the crime, which carries a maximum penalty of two years imprisonment and a $250,000 fine.
According to the indictment, Willms failed to pay the substantial sum in past due child support. The investigation into the case was conducted by the Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Inspector General. Assistant U.S. Attorney Thomas J. Wright is prosecuting the case.
Willms appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge John E. Simko on May 30, 2013, and pled not guilty to the indictment. The charge is merely an accusation, and Willms is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
The maximum penalties for conviction include two years imprisonment, a $250,000 fine, one year supervised release, one additional year upon revocation, a $100 assessment fee to the Federal Crime Victims Fund, and child support restitution amount owing at the time of sentencing.
Willms was released on bond pending trial, and a trial date has not been set. The investigation is ongoing, and the outcome of the case remains uncertain.
