Miguel Angel Trejo, Cocaine Smuggling, Texas 2024

A 28-year-old Pharr man has been sentenced to federal prison for importing over $200,000 in cocaine. Miguel Angel Trejo pleaded guilty to the charges on February 21.

Trejo was ordered to serve 50 months in federal prison, followed by three years of supervised release. At the hearing, the court heard additional evidence that Trejo played a key role in smuggling illegal narcotics into the United States.

The court noted that traffickers cannot succeed without the willing participation of transporters like Trejo. The sentence was handed down by U.S. District Judge Drew B. Tipton.

Trejo was initially stopped at the Rio Grande City port of entry checkpoint on November 30, 2023. He claimed to have no illegal drugs in his vehicle, but a K-9 alerted to the odor of narcotics during a secondary inspection. A search of the vehicle revealed 17 bricks of cocaine weighing approximately 19 kilograms hidden in compartments under the floorboards of the rear seat.

The cocaine had an estimated street value of approximately $230,000. At the time of his plea, Trejo admitted that he knew he was smuggling narcotics and had done so on multiple occasions.

Trejo will remain in custody pending transfer to a U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility to be determined in the near future. The investigation was conducted by Customs and Border Protection and Homeland Security Investigations, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Theodore Parran III prosecuting the case.

Trejo’s sentencing serves as a reminder of the importance of interagency cooperation in combating drug trafficking in the United States. As the war on drugs continues, it is clear that the willing participation of transporters like Trejo is essential to the success of traffickers.
