Rene Alvarez DeLeon, Jr., a 45-year-old Texas man, has been sentenced to 30 months in federal prison for failing to register as a sex offender in South Dakota. This conviction stems from his failure to update his registration in April 2020.
According to court documents, DeLeon, a convicted sex offender under the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act, knowingly failed to register and update his registration. He is a sex offender by reason of a conviction for sexual assault of a child under the laws of the State of Texas, and he traveled in interstate commerce, and having entered, left, and resided in Indian country, while failing to register or update his registration.
DeLeon was indicted for failure to register as a sex offender by a federal grand jury on March 2, 2021. He pled guilty to the charges on May 11, 2021. This guilty plea led to his current sentence.
Acting United States Attorney Dennis R. Holmes announced that DeLeon was sentenced on June 28, 2021, by U.S. District Judge Charles B. Kornmann. The judge’s decision came after considering the severity of DeLeon’s offense and the need for accountability.
As part of his sentence, DeLeon was also ordered to pay $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. This order reflects the court’s commitment to supporting victims of crime. The U.S. Marshals Service was instrumental in the investigation and apprehension of DeLeon.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeremy Jehangiri prosecuted the case, securing a conviction and a sentence that reflects the seriousness of DeLeon’s offense. The U.S. Marshals Service took DeLeon into custody immediately after the sentencing.
This case serves as a reminder of the importance of registration and compliance for sex offenders. The public has a right to know about individuals who have been convicted of sex offenses, and it is the responsibility of these individuals to register and update their information as required.
