Rapid City Man Charged with Sex Offender Registration Snafu
A Rapid City man has been slapped with serious charges after allegedly failing to register as a sex offender. Jeremy Eagle Bear, 25, was indicted by a federal grand jury on April 13, 2016, for Failure to Register as a Sex Offender.
According to court documents, Eagle Bear, who is required to register under the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act, knowingly failed to register and update his registration between December 15, 2015, and March 28, 2016. This offense carries a maximum penalty of up to 10 years in custody and/or a $250,000 fine, a mandatory minimum of 5 years of supervised release, and $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. Restitution may also be ordered.
Eagle Bear appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark A. Moreno on April 15, 2016, and pled not guilty to the Indictment. The investigation is being conducted by the U.S. Marshals Service, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Kirk Albertson prosecuting the case.
Eagle Bear was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service pending trial. A trial date has not been set. The charge is merely an accusation and Eagle Bear is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
The case highlights the importance of complying with sex offender registration requirements, which are in place to protect the public and ensure that individuals who have committed sex offenses are held accountable for their actions.
