Colten Romeo Thayer, Fentanyl Distribution, Texas 2024

A 20-year-old San Marcos man was put away for 10 years after getting caught with a lethal dose of fentanyl.

Colten Romeo Thayer, 20, was slammed with a 120-month prison sentence after being found guilty of possession with intent to distribute fentanyl, a deadly synthetic opioid.

According to court documents, Thayer was pulled over on Aug. 29, 2022, by Hays County Sheriff’s deputies during a routine traffic stop. Under the guise of a routine search, deputies uncovered a bag containing 11 grams of fentanyl.

The evidence revealed that Thayer had been buying fentanyl pills from other dealers in and around Hays County for personal use and to sell on the street. Thayer copped to the charges on Dec. 21, 2023.

The evidence was gathered thanks to a joint investigation by the Drug Enforcement Administration and the San Marcos Police Department, along with the efforts of Assistant U.S. Attorney Gabriel Cohen.

Co-defendant Anthony Perez Rios remains in federal custody, waiting for his sentencing hearing on May 23. Rios had pleaded guilty to one count of possession with intent to distribute 40 grams or more of a mixture or substance containing fentanyl.

U.S. Attorney Jaime Esparza of the Western District of Texas announced the sentencing. The move marks a major blow to the opioid epidemic plaguing Texas communities.

Thayer’s 10-year sentence serves as a stark reminder of the harsh consequences for those caught up in the opioid trade. Grimy Times will continue to follow this story and bring you updates as more information becomes available.
