In a daring daylight swindle, a cunning thief targeted a humble farmer from Saline County, Arkansas. In February 1904, V. D. Young, a well-meaning farmer, brought two bales of cotton to Little Rock with the hope of selling it to a reputable buyer. As he navigated the bustling business district, a smooth-talking stranger approached him, feigning interest in purchasing the cotton. The unsuspecting Young, eager to make a sale, was swayed by the stranger’s charm and agreed to unload the cotton at a nearby shed. The swindler, however, had a different plan in store. While Young stood by, the stranger negotiated the sale to a dealer and handed Young a check for the agreed-upon amount. Unbeknownst to Young, the check was a forgery, and the swindler had no intention of paying. The scammer then instructed Young to drive to a bank and wait for further instructions, while he made his escape. Young was left stunned and out of pocket, his valuable cotton gone.
