Thanh Hoa Thi Bui Sentenced to 63 Months for Embezzling Over $1.6M

BATON ROUGE, LA – In a shocking case of corporate theft, Thanh Hoa Thi Bui, a 42-year-old resident of Valdosta, Georgia, has been sentenced to 63 months in federal prison for embezzling over $1.6 million from a local business in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

According to U.S. District Judge Brian A. Jackson, Bui was convicted of wire fraud and making unlawful monetary transactions. The court further sentenced her to serve three years of supervised release following her term of imprisonment and ordered her to pay $1,694,095.59 in restitution.

Between 2017 and 2020, Bui worked at a small business in Baton Rouge, where she was trusted to handle bookkeeping and accounting duties. However, she used her access to the company’s bank account to make hundreds of fraudulent transactions, concealing the scheme from her employer.

Bui’s scheme involved generating checks payable to herself, using fraudulent pretenses to induce her employer to sign the checks, and then depositing them into her personal bank accounts. She also used the company’s bank account to pay for personal expenses, including electricity and gas for a large chicken farm in Mississippi.

As Bui continued to embezzle funds, she took extensive steps to conceal her scheme, providing her employer with altered bank statements and using her access to the company’s accounting program to disguise the fraudulent transactions.

The case was investigated by the United States Secret Service, with valuable assistance from the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office and the Louisiana State Police. Assistant United States Attorney Alan A. Stevens prosecuted the case, which was returned to the court in July 2023 after a federal grand jury indicted Bui for her crimes.

Bui’s location was unknown during the investigation, but she was finally arrested in Las Vegas, Nevada, in October 2023. Her sentence marks a significant victory for the victims of her crimes and serves as a warning to others who would seek to exploit their positions for personal gain.
