In the early spring of 1875, a young man, Geo. T. King, appeared at the money order window of the Chicago Joint Stock Land Bank in Chicago, Illinois, with a request that would spark a trail of deception. King, whose real intentions were shrouded in mystery, asked for two money orders, aggregating $75 in amount, to be paid to A. J. Williams of Canandaigua, New York. With the application, he handed the clerk a receipt or some other document that raised suspicions.
