The Web of Deceit: How Russian Diplomats Manipulated Central Asia

February 1880 marked a turning point in the Great Game of international politics, as a leaked Blue Book revealed the extent of Russian diplomacy’s influence in Central Asia. According to the document, General Roberts, a seasoned British military leader, had a chilling conversation with Takoob Khan, a key Afghan figure, in October 1879. Khan claimed that the British Mission, led by Sir Neville Chamberlain, was thwarted by the advice of the Russian envoy at Cabul, Stolietoff. The envoy allegedly instructed Khan to treat the British with deceit until the cold season passed, after which the ‘Almighty’ would intervene. This duplicitous scheme aimed to keep the English out of Afghanistan.
