A federal jury in Oklahoma has convicted Thomas Daniel Johnson, a 48-year-old church youth group leader, for engaging in a sexualized relationship with a minor.
Johnson, of Sand Springs, Oklahoma, was found guilty of attempted coercion and enticement of a minor, a federal crime that carries serious penalties.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s office, Johnson was known for mentoring adolescent males and was a volunteer youth leader at a church where the victim’s family attended.
Prosecutors alleged that Johnson repeatedly sent the minor, who was 11, 12, and 13 years old at the time, sexually explicit texts, memes, and images, and asked him to send nude photographs.
The victim’s mother discovered the messages in August 2020 and contacted law enforcement, who seized the minor’s phone and found thousands of messages exchanged between Johnson and the victim, dating back to March 2019.
During the trial, prosecutors argued that Johnson used psychological tactics to groom the minor, citing United States v. Chambers, which states that the ultimate goal of grooming is to form an emotional connection with the child and reduce their inhibitions to prepare them for sexual activity.
Johnson’s defense claimed that the messages were simply misguided humor and that he was trying to connect with the minor by using common terminology and references used among teenage males.
However, the jury rejected this argument and found Johnson guilty of the federal crime.
U.S. Attorney Clint Johnson praised the victim for his courage and strength in testifying against the defendant and commended the work of Assistant U.S. Attorneys Jeff Gallant and Valeria Luster for fighting for justice for the minor.
Johnson is currently awaiting sentencing, but his conviction sends a strong message that child predators will be held accountable for their actions.
As a society, we must remain vigilant in protecting our children from predators like Johnson and ensure that they receive the support and justice they deserve.
