GREAT FALLS, MT – Thomas Knife, 41, of Box Elder, Montana, is staring down a potential life sentence after admitting today to trafficking methamphetamine and illegally possessing firearms on the Rocky Boy’s Indian Reservation. The bust, a result of a December 2022 traffic stop, revealed a significant haul of drugs and weaponry, painting a picture of a brazen operator supplying poison to a vulnerable community.
According to court documents, law enforcement initially targeted another individual suspected of bringing narcotics into Montana. When that vehicle was stopped on the Reservation, Thomas Knife arrived on the scene claiming ownership. This quickly raised red flags, and a subsequent search of Knife’s truck yielded over a pound of methamphetamine, more than $500 in cash, and a staggering eight firearms – including a short-barreled shotgun, a .22-caliber rifle, and a 20-gauge shotgun with modified barrels. Hundreds of rounds of ammunition were also recovered.
Knife, also known as “Smurf” on the streets, was already on felony probation at the time of his arrest, making the possession of these weapons a particularly egregious violation of the law. He pleaded guilty today to possession with intent to distribute controlled substances and being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm before Chief U.S. District Judge Brian M. Morris. The government is seeking a mandatory minimum of 10 years, but the potential sentence extends to life in prison, along with a $10 million fine and at least five years of supervised release.
The investigation was a joint effort between the FBI, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), the Rocky Boy’s Police Department, and the Montana Highway Patrol. Assistant U.S. Attorney Ethan R. Plaut is leading the prosecution, signaling the seriousness with which federal authorities are treating this case. The sheer volume of firearms recovered suggests Knife wasn’t just moving drugs; he was heavily armed, potentially creating a dangerous situation for law enforcement and the community.
This case is being touted as part of the Department of Justice’s Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a broad initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence. However, for the residents of the Rocky Boy’s Indian Reservation, the promise of safer neighborhoods rings hollow until individuals like Thomas Knife are locked away for the long term. The sentencing hearing is scheduled for August 24th, where Judge Morris will determine the final punishment, taking into account federal sentencing guidelines and other relevant factors.
