MISSOULA, MT – Matthew Lucas Jones, 43, is headed to federal prison for six years and six months after pleading guilty to possession with intent to distribute controlled substances, a charge stemming from a traffic stop that revealed a dangerous cocktail of drugs and a fully functional pipe bomb. U.S. District Judge Donald W. Molloy handed down the sentence Friday, adding five years of supervised release to Jones’s term.
The bust unfolded June 1, 2021, when Missoula Police stopped Jones for driving into oncoming traffic while already a fugitive from state probation. The search of his vehicle uncovered a backpack stuffed with methamphetamine, heroin laced with fentanyl, and “dozens” of distribution baggies – clear evidence of a drug-dealing operation. But the real shock came with the discovery of a pipe bomb, later confirmed by experts as being capable of detonation.
Jones initially claimed ignorance, attempting to pass the buck by suggesting the contraband belonged to the vehicle’s previous owner. He insisted he had no knowledge of the backpack or its contents. However, investigators quickly dismantled that story with surveillance footage showing Jones carrying the very same backpack into a hotel the night before. The evidence painted a clear picture: Jones wasn’t a victim of circumstance, but a drug dealer with a penchant for explosives.
Beyond the drugs and bomb, authorities also seized $1,060 in cash, a silver coin, pre-paid cards, and two cell phones. A forensic examination of one of the phones revealed a trove of text messages directly linking Jones to drug sales. The combined weight of the evidence – the drugs, the bomb, the cash, and the digital trail – left little room for doubt.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Karla E. Painter led the prosecution, a collaborative effort involving the Missoula Police Department, Montana Probation and Parole, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). The case falls under the umbrella of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a federal initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence through focused enforcement and community partnerships.
The Department of Justice, through PSN, emphasizes a multi-pronged approach: building trust with communities, supporting local violence prevention programs, prioritizing strategic enforcement, and rigorously measuring results. While the program touts a commitment to safety, the stark reality remains: Matthew Lucas Jones’s actions brought danger to the streets of Missoula, and now he’ll pay the price behind bars.
