A former anesthesiologist from New Castle, Pennsylvania, has been sentenced to serve time for his role in distributing controlled substances.
Thomas Ranieri, 68, was sentenced in federal court for unlawfully prescribing and distributing controlled substances, including Oxycodone, Fentanyl, and Opana ER. He was sentenced to two years of supervised release, with the first year served as home detention, by United States District Judge David S. Cercone.
The charges against Ranieri stem from his activities as a pain-management specialist in clinics located in New Castle, Pennsylvania, and multiple locations in Ohio. Between January 2, 2013, and June 26, 2013, Ranieri prescribed and distributed quantities of Schedule II controlled substances outside the usual course of professional practice and without a legitimate medical purpose.
Ranieri pled guilty to fourteen distribution counts associated with his dispensing of approximately 1,100 doses of narcotics during his plea hearing on August 21, 2019. Assistant United States Attorney Eric G. Olshan prosecuted this case on behalf of the government.
The investigation that led to the prosecution of Ranieri was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General, Internal Revenue Service – Criminal Investigation, and the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General Medicaid Fraud Control Section.
