A convicted felon from Omaha is headed to prison after being caught with a cache of firearms, including one that had been reported stolen. Thomas Ray Coonce, 58, was sentenced to 24 months imprisonment to be followed by 3 years of supervised release, and ordered to pay a $100 special assessment.

The sentence was handed down by the Honorable Laurie Smith Camp, U.S. District Court Judge, on an unrelated conviction for being a felon in possession of a firearm.

The investigation into Coonce’s firearm possession began in July 2011, when a cooperating witness working with law enforcement purchased ½ gram of methamphetamine from Coonce. The witness then asked Coonce if he wanted to buy a gun, and Omaha Police officers obtained a search warrant for Coonce’s residence.

When the warrant was served, police located 13 firearms and one that had previously been reported stolen. Federal law makes it a felony for anyone who has been convicted of a felony offense to possess a firearm.

Coonce’s sentence includes 24 months imprisonment, followed by 3 years of supervised release. He is also required to pay a $100 special assessment.
