A Michigan orthodontist will spend the next six decades behind bars after federal prosecutors secured a 60-year sentence for sexually exploiting 18 children online, some as young as 12.
Thomas Shannon, 44, formerly of Byron Center, received the sentence on February 23 after pleading guilty to multiple counts of sexual exploitation of children. The case began when a 16-year-old girl in North Carolina reported being sexually exploited on Snapchat, triggering a joint investigation by federal and local authorities.
Investigators traced the abuse to Shannon, who was operating an orthodontic practice in Grandville at the time. Homeland Security Investigations agents discovered at least 16 additional child victims through his Snapchat account, with ages ranging from 12 to 17 years old.
“Shannon’s selfish and senseless exploitation of these children has exposed them to a lifetime of emotional damage,” said U.S. Attorney Timothy VerHey. “Preying on our children must stop, and we will seek long sentences against people like Shannon until it does stop.”
Federal prosecutors revealed that Shannon continued his criminal conduct even after being released on bond for state child sexual abuse material charges. From his yacht in Ottawa County, he met and exploited another victim through a different online application. The vessel was subsequently forfeited as part of the criminal prosecution.
The investigation involved Homeland Security Investigations Grand Rapids, Kent County Sheriff’s Office, Fuquay-Varina Police Department, and Prince George’s County Police Department as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat child sexual exploitation.
Acting Special Agent in Charge Jared Murphey emphasized that protecting children remains central to HSI’s mission, noting that extensive collaboration between agencies enabled investigators to identify victims and hold the defendant accountable for his crimes against minors.
