Threatening Judge Lands Inmate 77 Months Behind Bars

LUBBOCK, Texas — Dillon Alex Steele, a 31-year-old inmate, has been sentenced to an additional 77 months in federal prison for mailing a threatening letter to a federal judge, announced U.S. Attorney John Parker of the Northern District of Texas.

According to the factual resume filed in the case, Steele pleaded guilty in September 2015 to one count of mailing threatening communications. The letter, postmarked April 10, 2014, was addressed to U.S. District Judge Mary Lou Robinson and stated, in part, “…I’m gonna kill everyone at the courthouse, and the federal building, I’m gonna blow everything up sky high, may-be after nothing but death and destruction someone will listen then!”

Steele claimed he wrote the letter to bring attention to perceived civil rights violations at the Potter County Jail, but his DNA and fingerprints were on the envelope and letter. The FBI investigated the incident and Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeffrey Haag prosecuted the case.

Senior U.S. District Judge Sam R. Cummings handed down the sentence, which will run concurrently with Steele’s existing state custody sentence. Steele was already in custody on unrelated offenses.

The incident highlights the importance of respecting federal officials and the rule of law. Threatening a federal judge is a serious offense that can result in severe consequences.

Steele’s sentencing serves as a reminder that those who engage in such behavior will be held accountable for their actions. The U.S. Attorney’s Office will continue to work tirelessly to protect the public and uphold the law.

As the investigation and prosecution of this case demonstrate, the U.S. Attorney’s Office is committed to ensuring that those who threaten federal officials are brought to justice.
