Fresno, California – In a shocking turn of events, three Fresno County residents have been indicted for their involvement in a massive fentanyl and methamphetamine trafficking ring.
Arrest and Charges: Gilberto Arteaga, 41, of Fresno; Juan Castro, 48, of Sanger; and Shannon Calhoun, 53, of Sanger, were all arrested after a car owned by Calhoun was found to be carrying a large quantity of illicit substances. The three men have been charged with conspiring to possess with intent to distribute fentanyl and methamphetamine, and possessing with intent to distribute the same.
Investigation: According to court documents, the investigation began in the spring of 2023 after law enforcement became suspicious of Arteaga’s involvement in fentanyl trafficking. The probe revealed a connection between Arteaga and Calhoun’s car, which had made several trips into Mexico and back to California. On July 15, 2023, Calhoun’s car was stopped at the border and searched, revealing a stash of approximately 30,000 fentanyl pills and 30 pounds of methamphetamine.
Consequences: If convicted, the defendants face a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years up to a maximum statutory penalty of life in prison and a $10 million fine. This case is part of Operation Synthetic Opioid Surge (S.O.S.), a program designed to reduce the supply of deadly synthetic opioids in high-impact areas.
Program Background: Operation Synthetic Opioid Surge (S.O.S.) is a program implemented by the Justice Department to reduce the supply of deadly synthetic opioids in high-impact areas. The program was announced in July 2018 and is being implemented in the Eastern District of California and nine other federal districts.
Investigating Agencies: The case is the product of an investigation by FORT, a multi-agency team composed of Homeland Security Investigations, the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Fresno Police Department, and the Clovis Police Department.
Prosecution: Assistant U.S. Attorney Justin J. Gilio is prosecuting the case. The charges are only allegations, and the defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
