Fresno, Calif. — Today’s grim headlines from the federal courthouse bring a stark reminder of the ongoing battle against gun crime. Lance Jakell Henderson, 26, of Bakersfield, has been slapped with a one-count indictment for being a felon in possession of ammunition.
The allegations stem from an incident at the Marriott Courtyard hotel on October 2, 2022, where domestic violence reared its ugly head. When law enforcement arrived on scene, they identified Henderson as the culprit after the victim pointed him out. A search of his companion’s diaper bag unearthed a dangerous ghost gun, primed and loaded with eight rounds of 9mm ammunition. According to Henderson, he had taken the firearm from the room and concealed it in the baby gear.
This case is yet another victory for the relentless efforts of the Bakersfield Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Laurel J. Montoya is now handling the prosecution of this serious offense.
Henderson’s fate, if convicted, could be severe. He faces up to 15 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. However, any sentence will be at the court’s discretion, considering various factors as dictated by the Federal Sentencing Guidelines. Remember, Henderson is innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an initiative that unites law enforcement agencies and communities to combat violent crime and gun violence. Launched on May 26, 2021, PSN aims to foster trust, support community-based organizations, set strategic enforcement priorities, and measure results for a safer society.
