Three Indicted for Counterfeit Cash and Drugs
A federal grand jury indicted three Rapid City residents for their alleged involvement in a counterfeit cash and drug operation, authorities announced Tuesday.
Zachary Smith-Cline, 31, and Sara Smith-Cline, 32, were charged with possession with intent to distribute marijuana and methamphetamine, as well as counterfeiting and forging obligations and securities of the United States.
David Marshall, 36, was also charged with possession with intent to distribute marijuana and counterfeiting and forging obligations and securities of the United States.
According to the indictment, the offenses occurred between February 3-4, 2013.
The defendants appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Veronica L. Duffy on March 12, 2013, and pleaded not guilty to the indictment.
Zachary and Sara Smith-Cline face a maximum penalty of not less than 5 or more than 40 years’ imprisonment and/or a $5,000,000 fine if convicted. Marshall faces a maximum penalty of 20 years’ imprisonment and/or a $250,000 fine.
The investigation is being conducted by the United States Secret Service, the Unified Narcotics Enforcement Team, the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation, and the Rapid City Police Department.
Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Laura Shattuck and Assistant U.S. Attorney Eric Kelderman are prosecuting the case.
The defendants were remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshal. A trial date has not been set.
The charges against the trio are merely accusations, and they are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
