Ocala, FL – Timothy Eric Evans, 41, of Leesburg, Florida, will spend the next 15 years in federal prison after being sentenced Friday for illegally possessing a firearm, authorities announced. Senior United States District Judge Gregory A. Presnell handed down the sentence under the Armed Career Criminal Act, a harsh penalty reflecting Evans’ extensive criminal history.
The bust originated with a routine traffic stop. On May 21, 2021, Tavares Police officers discovered Evans behind the wheel of a stolen vehicle. The search of the vehicle wasn’t just about the car; it uncovered MDMA and, crucially, a loaded handgun stashed in the center console. While Evans initially claimed the drugs were his, he denied ownership of the firearm. But a deep dive into his cellphone quickly exposed a web of illegal activity.
Investigators found a treasure trove of evidence on Evans’ phone: a relentless stream of messages and images depicting narcotics and firearms. These weren’t just casual views; the messages showed Evans actively attempting to buy and sell weapons, further cementing the case against him. This wasn’t a first-time offense, not by a long shot. Evans has a rap sheet stretching back decades, riddled with violent crimes.
Court records reveal a pattern of escalating criminal behavior. Evans’ prior convictions include attempted strongarm robbery (1998), robbery with a firearm (1998), aggravated assault with a deadly weapon (1998), strongarm robbery (2003), attempted second-degree murder (2008), possession of a firearm by a convicted felon (2008), sale of cocaine (2008), and possession of cocaine (2020). These convictions unequivocally prohibit him from possessing firearms or ammunition under federal law. The judge clearly saw this as a dangerous repeat offender.
Federal officials framed the case as part of “Project Safe Neighborhoods” (PSN), a broad initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence by fostering collaboration between law enforcement and local communities. The Department of Justice recently doubled down on PSN, emphasizing community trust, prevention programs, strategic enforcement, and measurable results. However, for Evans, prevention clearly failed, and the results are a lengthy prison sentence.
The investigation was a joint effort between the Tavares Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). Assistant United States Attorney Hannah Nowalk prosecuted the case. In addition to the 15-year sentence, the court ordered the forfeiture of the handgun and ammunition seized during the arrest, removing those weapons from the streets. Evans’ future looks bleak, and this case sends a clear message: convicted felons illegally possessing firearms will face serious federal consequences.
