LAKE WORTH, FL – Charles David Mobley, 50, is headed to federal prison for two years after admitting to running guns for the ATF. Mobley was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Brian J. Davis on Tuesday, January 30, 2024, after pleading guilty on April 4, 2022, to making false statements to a licensed firearms dealer.
The case began to unravel when investigators with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) noticed a pattern: firearms linked to various criminal investigations were traced back to Mobley. It wasn’t long before undercover agents began to target him, posing as buyers seeking illegal weapons.
Between July and August of 2021, the ATF orchestrated five separate “straw purchases” with Mobley. He willingly walked into gun stores, purchased the firearms requested by the agents, and lied on the required federal paperwork, claiming he was the true buyer. He then handed those firearms over to the undercover operatives. Mobley wasn’t buying these guns for himself; he was a middleman, a conduit for getting weapons into the hands of who-knows-who.
In total, Mobley illegally procured nine firearms for the ATF, some equipped with high-capacity magazines. That’s nine weapons that could have ended up on the streets, used in violent crimes. The ATF didn’t reveal exactly where the initial traced firearms originated, but the implication is clear: Mobley wasn’t a one-time offender, and this operation aimed to cut off a significant source of illegal weaponry.
Assistant United States Attorney David B. Mesrobian prosecuted the case. This sentencing is part of the Department of Justice’s “Project Safe Neighborhoods” (PSN), a nationwide initiative aiming to reduce violent crime and gun violence by fostering collaboration between law enforcement and communities. The program sounds nice on paper, but the real work is putting guys like Mobley behind bars.
While two years is a sentence, it barely scratches the surface of the damage Mobley could have caused. The ATF’s Tampa Field Division handled the investigation, and they’ll likely be keeping a close eye on any associates Mobley might have. The streets are a little safer, but the gun trade doesn’t simply disappear with one conviction.
