William Joseph Timothy, Cash Theft, Florida 2023

William Joseph Timothy, a 43-year-old former Naples Airport U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Officer from Ave Maria, has pleaded guilty to stealing cash from arriving international airline passengers during the course of his official duties.

According to the plea agreement, Timothy stole approximately $18,700 in cash from airline passengers during 17 incidents of theft uncovered by CBP’s Office of Professional Responsibility investigators. The thefts occurred between mid-2023 and early-2024, during border enforcement examinations and currency verifications performed as part of his official duties as an assigned CBP Officer at Naples Airport.

The investigation, led by U.S. Customs and Protection’s Office of Professional Responsibility, revealed that Timothy was surreptitiously stealing cash from arriving international passengers. The evidence collected during the investigation was used to build a case against Timothy, who now faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in federal prison.

As part of his plea agreement, Timothy has agreed to pay full restitution to the victims of his thefts. He has also agreed to immediately resign from his employment with CBP, effective immediately. This move is seen as a step towards accountability and a commitment to restoring trust in the CBP.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Simon R. Eth. A sentencing date has not yet been set, but Timothy will have to face the consequences of his actions in the coming months. The guilty plea is a significant development in the case, and it highlights the importance of holding public officials accountable for their actions.

The United States Attorney Roger B. Handberg announced the guilty plea, stating that the actions of Timothy were a betrayal of the trust placed in him as a CBP Officer. The incident has raised concerns about the integrity of the CBP and the need for stricter measures to prevent such incidents in the future.

In a statement, the U.S. Customs and Protection’s Office of Professional Responsibility emphasized its commitment to investigating and prosecuting cases of corruption and misconduct within the CBP. The office has been working tirelessly to root out corruption and ensure that CBP Officers uphold the highest standards of integrity and professionalism.
