Defendant Fled from Police, Dropped Gun During Pursuit

In a shocking turn of events, 23-year-old Timothy Staton of Bridgeport, Connecticut, pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm by a convicted felon in Hartford federal court yesterday. Staton’s crime came to light on September 13, 2018, when he fled from Bridgeport Police officers outside his residence.

The pursuit that ensued saw Staton remove a Glock 43 9mm handgun and throw it to the ground. Court documents and statements made in court revealed Staton’s actions were in direct violation of federal law.

According to authorities, Staton was previously convicted of a felony robbery offense in 2010 and felony narcotics, firearm, and racketeering offenses in 2014. This makes him a prime example of why the federal government takes gun possession by convicted felons so seriously.

In a statement, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut John H. Durham said, ‘It is a violation of federal law for a person previously convicted of a felony offense to possess a firearm or ammunition that has moved in interstate or foreign commerce.’

Staton is scheduled to be sentenced by U.S. District Judge Michael P. Shea on May 20, 2019, at which time he faces a maximum term of imprisonment of 10 years. He has been detained since his arrest on September 13, 2018.

This case is being investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Bridgeport Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jocelyn Courtney Kaoutzanis is prosecuting the case.

This prosecution is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program bringing together all levels of law enforcement and the communities they serve to reduce violent crime and make neighborhoods safer for everyone.
