Todd Shorey, Heroin Conspiracy, Maine 2016

Todd Shorey, 52, of Newport, Maine, has been convicted of a serious crime. Shorey pled guilty in U.S. District Court to conspiring to distribute more than a kilogram of heroin.

According to court records, between May 2015 and January 2016, Shorey conspired with Jamie Akerson and others to distribute over a kilogram of heroin. Shorey, Akerson and others obtained large quantities of heroin on a weekly basis from an out-of-state source and had it distributed throughout Central Maine.

Jamie Akerson, a co-conspirator, had previously pled guilty to the same charge on April 14, 2017.

The charge carries a sentence of between 10 years and life in prison, an $8,000,000 fine, and at least five years of supervised release. Shorey’s decision to plead guilty may have spared him a lengthy trial, but he now faces a significant sentence.

The case was investigated by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, with assistance provided by the Maine State Police. This case is a stark reminder of the opioid epidemic that continues to plague our nation.

The U.S. government has taken a strong stance against those who distribute heroin and other illicit substances. Those found guilty of such crimes can expect to face severe penalties, including lengthy prison sentences and substantial fines.

Todd Shorey is currently awaiting sentencing. His case serves as a warning to those who would engage in such activities: the consequences are severe, and the risk of getting caught is high.
